Seeking the Risen Christa

During this day, we’ll explore a range of images and different associated meanings of the Christa – the female Christ-figure developed by feminist theologians and artists over the past few decades, but also reaching back into ancient Christian tradition.  We will explore the development of the idea and see what it might mean to us today, how it might challenge and inspire us.   We will particularly explore the question of why most images of the Christa have been of suffering, crucified figure, and why imaging a risen Christa may be particularly important for women and men in this time.

The day will use a range of learning methods, and draw particularly on visual images and on poetry expressing different facets of the Christa.  It will be theologically challenging and creative, and spiritually nourishing, with a reflective element.   There will be time and space for making your own individual and group responses to the material.

Nicola Slee is a poet and theologian based at the Queen’s Foundation, Birmingham.   She is the author of numerous books and articles, including Seeking the Risen Christa (SPCK, 2011) and Presiding Like a Woman (SPCK, 2010, co-edited with Stephen Burns).  Apart from her work at Queen’s, where she co-ordinates the MA in Applied Theological Studies and supervises research students, she has a wide freelance portfolio including retreat work, spiritual direction, speaking engagements and consultancy.
